About The Book
‘Across races and religions, I have infected,
Art of equality; better than humans, I’d perfect,
I’m no human offender, for a country to deport,
I’m a globetrotter, with no visas or a passport!’
Thus, it spoke, beaming with the confidence of a world conqueror. The virus stands in no queue at any consulate for a travel visa, and doesn’t wait at any immigration counter to be let inside the country. It seeks no permission to infect and has no discriminating outlook. As a morbid agent of equality, it infects all who are exposed to it, across nationalities, races, religions, caste and creed.
The quatrain above, is spoken by the virus. It is just one among the many voices from the Covid-19 pandemic written as short narrative poetry. ‘Once upon a confinement… ’ is a collection of fifty lockdown poems written in the backdrop of the nationwide lockdown in India declared on March 25th 2020, in the wake of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) global pandemic. The poems are written in first and third person narratives, of six quatrains each. They are inspired from real Indian news reports published during the days of the lockdown, in print, digital and the electronic media. From the morning newspaper on the coffee table, from the TV and the computer screens, they flow down taking the form of poetry, and get collected as ‘Once upon a confinement… ’. All the poems in this collection attempt to provide pictures of the lockdown from various eyes, its effects, the affected and they finally try to emphasize not just pain and struggle of the affected, but also their hope and resilience. They are voices of the migrant laborers forced to go back to their native towns and villages bereft of their livelihoods, many walking hundreds of kilometers under the scorching summer’s sun, while some cycle the same distances for days and a few even braving the deep sea to sail back home. The poems also introduce to the readers, the commoners who get stuck at state borders and at unfamiliar railway stations during the lockdown. Some poems speak about the pain suffered by the frontline warriors like doctors and the injustices meted out to them by the society.
